Characters

The main character of the story. Designated operator of Evangelion Unit One. His mother died when he was very little. He and his father Gendou have lived apart for at least a decade. A sudden message from Gendou brings Shinji to Tokyo-3, and on that very day, an "Angel" attacks the city. As a chosen Evangelion Operator, he fights on, though thoroughly agonized. He is referred to as "Third Children" (a term meaning "the third qualifier"). In personality, he is a quiet, overachiever type. Age: 14.

Katsuragi Misato (Voice: Mitsuishi Kotono)
"NERV" Operations Chief. Evangelion Pilot Shinji's immediate superior. In the course of events, she becomes a guardian/caretaker figure to Shinji. An attractive woman with a cheerful, optimistic personality. Age: 29.

Ayanami Rei (Voice: Hayashibara Megumi)
Designated Operator of Evangelion Unit Zero. Has been undergoing special training since Evangelion development began. Suffered serious injuries when an accident occurred during testing. Referred to as "First Children" ("the first qualifier"). A girl of very few words. Has considerable difficulty expressing emotion. Age: 14.

Sohryu Asuka Langley (Voice: Miyamura Yuuko.)
Designated Pilot of Evangelion Unit Two. Like Rei, she too has undergone special training. Three-quarters German, one-quarter Japanese, born and raised in the U.S. Hates to lose at anything. Age: 14. Referred to as "Second Children" ("the second qualifier). First appears in episode eight.

Akagi Ritsuko (Voice: Yamaguchi Yuriko)
Head of the Evangelion Development Project. Has known Misato since they were in school together. A cool, intellectual beauty. Age: 30.

Suzuhara Touji (Voice: Seki Tomokazu.)
A classmate and close friend of Shinji's. A hothead type who is very direct in expressing his feelings. Speaks in Osaka dialect. Age: 14. First appears in episode three.

Aida Kensuke (Voice: Iwanaga Tetsuya.)
Another classmate and close friend of Shinji's. A military otaku, he carries a video camera with him wherever he goes. Age: 14. First Appears in Episode three.

Kaji Ryouji (Voice: Yamadera Kooichi.)
Together with Asuka, he comes to Japan from NERV Section Three, in Germany. An old friend of Misato and Ritsuko.

Ikari Gendou (Voice: Tatsuki Fumihiko)
Supreme Commander of the special agency, NERV. Simultaneously, Chief Director of the Evangelion Development Project. Father of Shinji. A man about whom there is a great deal of mystery. Age: 48.
